Good News Friday - The Collin Edition

As you know, Monday was Collin's birthday.

It also happened to be a snow day around here. So, Wednesday morning (Collin's school program is a MWF schedule) we packed up the temporary tattoo books Collin had picked as a treat for his classmates, along with some leftover goodies from his weekend birthday party. It was going to be fun, but no big deal.

Except this is what happened.

Decorations, party horns, a planned-out surprise. Those streamers in the lower left hand corner are special decorations for Collin's chair and there is a stack of handmade birthday cards from his classmates.

It totally stunned me and melted my heart into mush. I'll spare you the sermon on inclusion. The videos speak for themselves.

Happy 7th Birthday, Collin

It wasn't long ago that Collin's birthdays were really hard for me. They brought up all of the pain surrounding his birth and infancy. They pointed out to me the difference between him and the other kids his age. They poked my wounds while I was coming to terms with who Collin is and letting go of who I had thought he would be.

And now, now. Collin's birthday is a true celebration for me. It is a reminder of healing and joy.

Happy Birthday, my sweet boy.

Good News Friday

Can I get an amen?

Can I get an amen?

Phew. I think extra good news is in order this week, don't you?

I'm loving the Black Friday pushback trend. I especially enjoy the idea of making state parks and other outdoor areas free on Black Friday. That's a deal and a half.

Besides offering all sorts of practical help, the people of Bute, Scotland are welcoming Syrian refugees with a free screening of It's a Wonderful Life. I can't wrap my mind around all of the ways that is amazing.

This 16 year-old guy has invented a device to allow people with certain disabilities to speak using breath patterns. It is light, user friendly, extremely affordable, and it actually works: a virtually unheard of combination for adaptive equipment.

Preorders for my first book shipped this week! My sister and I are really pleased with the final product and we're getting lots of good feedback from people who have received their copies.

This restaurant owner is offering free dinner to anyone who will be spending Thanksgiving Day alone.

I LOVE this list of hilarious Thanksgiving food requests. "Butt rolls"!

Here's Collin's number one favorite thing right now. Simultaneously freaky and amazing. Pay no attention to the drug references.

And if you're still feeling down, all you have to do is watch this video of Baby Collin talking and laughing. My work here is done.

Birthday Boy

Every year for his birthday, Collin gets a video with pictures of his past year set to a song. In the past, I have had the honor of choosing the song, but this year Collin is getting somewhat opinionated (he IS six, after all), so he got to choose.

He chose this song because: 1. It narrowly beat out this beatbox performance as his favorite song of the year; and 2. It is about taking a bath (basically), which is also one of his favorite things to do.
